Sweetbay Supermarkets closing 3 stores in East Hillsborough

Sweetbay Supermarkets opened its first store in Largo, Florida in November 2004. Today there are 107 stores as far South as Naples and North to Gainesville.

Tampa-based Sweetbay Supermarket will close seven underperforming grocery stores, including three in Hillsborough County, advised a company spokesman for Belgian parent, Delhaize Group. The remaining four stores targeted for closing are in Fort Myers, Sarasota and Charlotte County.

The three Hillsborough stores are located at 1247 Kingsway Road in Brandon, 1101 Bloomingdale Ave. in Valrico, and 789 Cortaro Drive in Wimauma near Sun City.

Sweetbay plans to open three new area stores in 2009. One is in Hillsborough on Bruce B Downs, another is in Tarpon Springs and the third is in Clermont, a western suburb of Orlando. Sweetbay employs about 8,500, and currently operates 108 stores, including 47 in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, with another six in Pasco.

Sorry to see you go, I liked the store on Bloomingdale, but the store in FishHawk Ranch is still open.

I’ve heard a lot about big chain stores like these closing branches in the Brandon-Valrico area on top of the national closing of all Circuit City stores and a few already open properties (such as the old gold’s gym on lythia and lumsden). Is this going to drive down the prices to lease these big store fronts?

Hi Amy ~ I certainly can understand your feelings. Believe it or not, I was with Eastman Kodak about he same amount of time before I was laid off. You have me by about 3 months.

Unless someone has poured the majority of their work life into their job and thought that they would do nothing else in their career, the sudden life change can be devastating.

I was let go during the recession of 2000 and could not find a job. I ended up in the mortgage and real estate industry. I was thrown into it to survive.

But, I have been rewarded in this business more than I can describe. Even with the last three years of turmoil, I cannot express the pleasure I have had by helping people with the such a huge decision in their personal life.

There is an opportunity out there for you Amy. A favorite saying of mine is “Every adversity is the seed of greater benefit.” I hope to hear from you soon on how you took this adversity and made it grow into a more rewarding opportunity for yourself.

    I wish you the best!
